New monitor time!
Wellp, my Sony Trinitron Multiscan15sf is finally biting the dust... hard...
Lucky it's about back to school time, which means it's almost Balance of Aid check time. So, after I get rent and fraternity dues payed off, I should have around 200$. Combine all this with me getting a credit card, and it's monitor shopping time!
I originally wanted a Samsung SyncMaster 740B. It's a nice 17" LCD with 8ms response time. Wellp, too bad noone carries it anymore.
So, now I'm looking at a couple of other options:
Samsung 740BX - 17" 5ms
Samsung 940BF - 19" 2ms
Please give me your opinions on these two. I'm leaning towards the 740BX. I am going with Samsung atm, because I use a 740B at work, and it's amazing. I am a bit leary though, because that one got an image of the logon screen burnt into after being on for a weekend. I know that's a long time with no screen saver, but it kinda makes me edgy. The burn is fading back to normal with time though.
Anyway, I'm open to any other suggestions you guys may have. I can use VGA or DVI. I prefer 17" because I have a small desk at home (and it's going to better than my 15" CRT no matter what). I play fast paced FPS games like Half-Life and UT, and I also watch movies on my computer.
TY in advance.

I would go with 19" because of the 2ms response time. Should help in gaming.

I woudl agree. Bigger screen and faster response time is always a good thing.

Thing is, I don't have much desk space. A 17" LCD actually takes up more width than my current CRT. A 19" almost defeats the purpose (as far as space saving goes). Plus the price tag is a small issue. The Response time would be nice, but would it really make that noticeable of a difference between 2ms and 5ms? Most of the guides I've read have said for gaing, 12ms is doable, 8ms is standard, and 2-6 is excellent.

im playing on a Flatron 20,1" Super-IPS screen
at 1600x1200, and it only has 16ms response, and it doesnt cause me any "lag" or ghosting in the gfx, so dont stare urself blind at the numbers, if u dont have alot of space i would go for 17" , its cheaper, takes less space, but still has same max resolution
look at reviews on both ur screens and try to find out if there are any common problems with any of them, and running a logon screen for a full weekend isnt healthy for any monitor so dont think about that
oh, and FYI i do play fast paced games to before anyone says anything, RA3 UT2K4 and so on

lol. I work as a hardware specialist at my university. We accidentally left it connected to a machine we had just finished setting up, and didn't have a screen saver set. Oops.
Glad to hear your success with the 16ms! If UT2K4 runs fine with no ghosting, I'm not worried at all.
The 244T would be nice, but I don't have 900$. If I spend over 250$ I'm in debt. The 740BX is looking better and better. Anyone know of any off-brand 17" that compare?

Looks good from the reviews there. Only thing is, if you really want to go cheap, there are good 17inch LCDs for around $100-120. You seem to be limiting yourself to Samsung, but there really isn't a problem with that as the monitor has GREAT reviews. Reviews say no ghosting.

I'm sticking with samsung becaue I have experience with them. Those and Dell. But after working on and replacing Dells at work constantly, I'm gonna pass on those. Are there some other brands I should look at?

I'm also wondering the same thing, what are some good LCD monitors for under $250? I could spend more but don't feel like it, if there's any that are absolutely godlike for $350 I suppose I could splurge and get a more expensive LCD.
I'm actually going to wait until my CRT monitor starts acting up a bit more before I buy a new LCD monitor, but I think that will only be a few months so it helps to shop now

I love this value monitor! It's been around the $130 or less range for a long time and has pretty darn good quality, although right now i can't find it on sale for under 180 ....

Found It
My decision just got made. Locally, no less. BestBuy has a freakin sweet deal going on right now. The Samsung 940BW is only $200! 19" Widescreen, and 4ms response time!! I can't pass that up. Unfortunately they were out of stock this evening, but there is a new shipment due in tomorrow, so I'll be there at lunch. Space is an issue, but I can't pass this up. I'll toss my stereo and just use headphones or something.
Only thing is there are no reviews. This is one of the newest models, and neither TigerDirect nor NewEgg have it listed. But, like I said before, Samsung has been pretty reliable for me. And the one on display looked beautiful.
Anyways, Thx for all your comments!

I'm looking to sell a NEC MultiSync FE2111SB. It's in perfect condition and can be had by anyone for a cheap price. Graphics are beautiful and text is very sharp. It's big though.
